Book Review – “The Long Tail”

Although I’ve been peppering my conversations with the phrase “the long tail” for nearly two years, only recently did I get the opportunity to actually read the book that spawned the term. On a recent vacation to Sanibel Island (when I tend to do most of my “pleasure” reading), I devoured Chris Anderson’s book in [...]

MySpace Beats Facebook to the Punch With Ad Customization

A few weeks back I wrote about some of the savvy moves that Facebook has made in the last six to 12 months to make them a prime acquisition target for one of the big three. Toward the end of the post I wrote:

“However, what makes Facebook unique – and thus valuable to companies like [...]

iRate: Apple mistreats its customers yet again

As was reported last week, Apple cut the price of its 8 GB iPhone from $599 to $399, just 10 weeks after the phone was first introduced amid a sea of hype and countless television commercials. The move left many of the hundreds of thousands of early adopters feeling not only bamboozled, but angry as [...]

Spock’s Clever Traffic-Driving Contest

It seems I’m writing a lot these days about social networking. As I mentioned a few posts back, Facebook and others are garnering the buzz that was previously afforded only to Google, so this topic has been very much top of mind for me recently.
At lunch earlier this week, a former colleague tipped me off [...]

I’ve Got Friends in Low Places, but Who Cares?

Each week I look forward to Max Kalehoff’s Friday “Online Spin” column for MediaPost (go here for the RSS feed). I can usually count on Max’s columns to offer unique insight on the intersection of brand marketing, WOM and Web 2.0.
In this week’s column, “Please, No More Friends,” Max introduces the concept of “friendship overload,” [...]

Is Facebook the Next Google, or the Next Angelfire?

John Battelle asked a very simple yet interesting question on his blog last week: Is Facebook cooler than Google?
Even six months ago, the question would have seemed preposterous. Cooler than Google? Who could be cooler than Google? But recently, much like the Seinfeld episode when the fortunes of George and Elaine are reversed – schlubby [...]

Book Review – “The eCommerce 2.0 Handbook”

Earlier this month, buySAFE announced a partnership with online selling solutions provider Infopia to integrate the buySAFE solution with Infopia’s platform. This will be a tremendous partnership, as it lets Infopia merchants benefit from the power of buySAFE regardless of where they sell – on marketplaces like eBay, on their own website, or some combination [...]

eBay’s Google Boycott Doesn’t Impact Site Traffic… Really?

From today’s New York Post:
“Ebay’s decision to pull its ads from Google’s U.S. Web site has had little impact on its total traffic…”
Really? Am I the only one who’s a little skeptical about that claim? Estimates put eBay’s quarterly spend on Google at $25 million. Considering that the majority of eBay’s search terms are [...]

Bookmark It – Sanoodi

If you’re a runner, cyclist, or just someone who enjoys the occasional hike, Sanoodi is a site you must check out.
A clever mashup with Google Maps, Sanoodi lets you plot a course by dropping markers on a Google map and tracking the distance and elevation. When you’ve finished entering your route, you can save it. [...]

Windorphins? Wind orphans? Win dolphins?

I just returned from Boston after attending eBay Live. I’m not sure whether to attribute it to the location or simply seller malaise, but the lack of energy at this year’s event compared to previous years was palpable. I heard attendance estimates of anywhere from 6,000-7,000, compared to 15,000 last year in Las Vegas.
Equally lacking [...]
